If Democrats Wanted Immigration Reform, They Would Do It Now

While President Joe Biden records gaffe after gaffe while reading off a teleprompter about Roe v. Wade weeks after it was finally overturned, a golden opportunity is being missed yet again by Democrats to reform our nation's broken immigration laws.

For two decades, moderate Congressional Republicans stuck in leadership have tried and failed to reform our immigration system by working with a Democrat minority. Every time, hard line conservatives have managed to just barely undermine the agreement that moderates and Democrats have wanted.

Now, more than ever is the time for Democrats to pass immigration reform, with the country on the verge of a massive red wave thanks to a horrifically inadequate response to inflation, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the surrender of Afghanistan and our allies to the Taliban, and the failure to handle absolutely any challenge that our country has faced. The Democrats are losing their Congressional majorities no matter what, so they might as well pass meaningful reform while they still can.

The reason Democrats haven't even attempted to pass immigration reform is because they don't want it. Democrats are content to let Republicans divide themselves over reform while they have something to campaign on. The ISSUE of immigration reform is more valuable to Democrats than any solution they could pass with their 51/50 Senate majority.

With the Democrats 50 seats, several Republicans ready to fix our broken immigration system with them, and a tie breaker in the Vice-President, there is nothing standing in the way of significant immigration reform, even if that includes amnesty and a path to citizenship. If only Democrats wanted it.

It's a human tragedy, too. For decades, our immigration process has forced millions to rely on human traffickers and drug cartels to smuggle them across our southern border. This has made the US/Mexico border the fourth most dangerous in the world. Fewer people die crossing from North Korea to China than die on our southern border.

Whatever the reform is, it desperately needs to be done. It is such a tragedy that Democrats don't have the will to do anything about it.
