President Obama asks George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to lead Haiti Relief Effort

Former US Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush

After the 2004 Tsunami in the south Pacific, President George W. Bush asked his father and former President Bill Clinton to lead the relief effort. Months later after Hurricane Katrina, the former Presidents were once again asked to be the face of the relief and rebuilding effort. Well, now that Haiti has been devastated by a massive earthquake, President Obama is following in President Bush's footsteps and asking both Presidents Clinton and G.W. Bush to head the US relief efforts in the country.

Personally, I think this is great. The people who have served as the President of the United States of America have a lot of knowledge, skills, contacts, and influence that constitutionally can no longer be tapped in the national government. Regardless of what you think about their policies and approaches toward governance, their talents have too often been wasted. This is really a wonderful use of their talents and now that President Obama has used former Presidents in the same way, it's pretty much become a tradition that's going to be here to stay.

Yeah, I know there are idiots who don't think we should be involved in relief work, at least not foreign relief work led by the national government. I couldn't disagree more and thankfully, our Presidents have been men of character who are willing to put service before politics. Kudos to President Obama, Bush, Clinton, and Bush.
