Is Privatization Really All It’s Cracked Up To Be? Health Insurance

This is the first of a series of posts I’m going to write about the topic of privatization. Nobody is going to like what I have to write. I’ll be accused of betraying the Republican Party, conservative principles, and everything else under the sun. Perhaps somebody along the way will skip the name calling and convince me I’m wrong about the conclusions I’m reaching. It’s happened quite a few times before, as it should happen to any open minded individual interested more in truth than politics or ideologies. In my defense, I will say this. I am still a Republican, but more closely in line with the ideas of Theodore Roosevelt than the modern Republican Party. Libertarians and today’s Republicans argue that the government is the biggest threat to our liberty to the exclusion of all others. I would disagree with that because, at least in our society, it seems like our liberties, freedoms, and economic security are also endangered by large corporations. The only difference is that these corporations play a bigger part in our everyday lives and there’s no democratic system in place for the people to change their abusive, unfair policies.

A couple years ago, I reflected a bit on my life-to-date and asked a very interesting question.

“Who has screwed me over more? Private corporations or the government?” As a pretty staunch Republican at the time, much more so than today, I was a little surprised by the answer. I’ve gotten screwed a lot worse and a lot more often by the private sector. I have a feeling that most of us who have stayed on the right side of the law probably feel the same way, even if some of you will never admit it. I haven’t talked about this a whole heck of a lot, but when I do, the most frequent response I get is that I get screwed every paycheck when I pay taxes. I usually reply that it’s not getting screwed. I pay taxes; which in turn pay for government services our democratically elected representatives democratically decided that we needed. In fact, I’m getting a pretty good bargain because Americans aren’t even paying close to enough for all that we’re getting (some people call it debt, I prefer to think of it as stealing from China).

What’s really inspired this series is the horrible service I’ve received from my former health insurance company, Humana. On Christmas Eve of 2010, I became really ill. You know that scene in the Exorcist when the puke was flying everywhere? Well, that was me, my bathroom (where it started), the laundry room, and my bedroom for twelve consecutive hours. I couldn’t even chew on ice chips without vomiting. After being up all night vomiting continuously (and otherwise becoming dehydrated in ways you don’t want to hear about), I realized that I needed to go to the emergency room to get an IV (or four) and some sort of pill to ease the nausea.

I waited in the emergency room for three more hours, puking just as frequently and scaring everybody else in the room out.

Once I got into one of the emergency rooms and had a nurse take my temperature and blood pressure (both were understandably high), I waited another hour for a doctor to approve an IV and some other sort of medicine for the nausea.

After another half hour, I was wheeled out of the emergency room and into the emergency hallway (I still got billed for an entire room for the entire time I was there).

Thankfully, about 17 or 18 hours after this started, my body was getting hydrated again courtesy of the IVs; and the nearly constant projectile vomit was finally over.

According to my Humana plan, I had to pay something like $75 at the hospital for an ER visit and then a $1,000 deductible followed by 25% of what was left. At first, Humana did what they were supposed to do. They covered everything my deductible didn’t. Then, about three months later, I got a letter from Humana saying they changed their mind and they weren’t going to pay everything they said they were going to. Somehow, that resulted in me paying roughly $3,000 of about roughly $4,000 in medical bills. Mind you, I’m an unemployed college student at this time, but thankfully my GI Bill provided a necessary source of income so that I didn’t have to max out my credit card (I hate using credit cards). I finally, and proudly, paid off the medical bills in December 2011 (a few months early). I can also proudly say that I paid off my car during this same time (that’s a whole other story). Granted, I had to cancel my health insurance after this because it was the only way I could afford to pay off the medical bills they left me with (IRONY!), but it wasn’t worth paying $250 a month for unreliable insurance like Humana. It actually would have been more affordable to save just $150 a month for all that time and then just pay my bills with cash.

Well, last week (27 January 2012), I received another letter from Humana. They changed their mind… again. They decided they don’t want to pay a dime of my medical bills, leaving me with over $1000 more to pay the hospital. Of course, the lovely people who work for Porter Memorial Hospital just gave Humana back the money no-questions-asked and now I’m waiting for a bill. Humana provided absolutely no feedback explaining their decision to do this 13 MONTHS after the service was provided.

Which begs the question: How can any American household have any sense of financial security when an insurance company can randomly take back any medical payment for any service they partially covered for any number of years in the past? I was a pretty big opponent of socialized medicine three years ago. My position has changed. Even if everything said about rationed care and death panels was true (it’s not), I would rather take my chances with a slightly lower level of quality than live the rest of my life in fear that I might be charged for a service a former health insurance provider decides not to cover (after telling me otherwise).

Several people now have told me to seek legal action against Humana and I’m damn near ready to. But let’s be honest. I’m a lower-middle class American who is in the process of buying his first house. I can’t afford a legal team big enough to take on a multi-Billion dollar corporation like Humana. All I would be doing is wasting time I don’t have (because I have to work) and money I don’t have (which is why I’m working). There are arrogant SOBs that are so out of touch with the real world, like Mitt Romney, who say that corporations are people. REALLY? By that logic, I should have the same ability to walk into Porter Memorial Hospital, ask for my $3000 back, and tell them to send the entire $4000 bill back to Humana because I don’t want to pay it more than they don’t want to pay it.

Free-Marketeers will argue that Humana will go out of business if they treat their customers like this, so it will all work out in the end.

Really?! I’ve been seriously ripped off by Humana. I’m sharing my story with the world. Yet tomorrow, people will continue to sign new policies with Humana. No corporation that currently uses Humana will drop Humana because they’re ripping off a former customer. Even if somehow this blog post is miraculously read by every American; and Humana goes bankrupt for ripping off thousands of customers; it does nothing for me, who Humana stole thousands of dollars from and has no realistic course of legal action.

St. Baldrick’s 2012 Fundraiser

Last year in March, I put myself out there and shaved my head to raise money for a really awesome charity: The St. Baldrick’s Foundation. If you weren’t following me then, or if you just need a reminder; St. Baldrick’s Foundation is devoted to finding a cure for Childhood Cancers and helping the thousands of children who are currently inflicted with cancer.

Thanks to your incredible support and donations in 2011, I managed to raise $500 in less than a month. My biggest regret wasn’t the flat tire I got on the way to the event; nor was it how really, really cold my scalp was. To be honest, my biggest regret was that I didn’t start raising money sooner.

After participating last year, I decided I would make it a tradition; and every year, I would shave my head (including my beard) at a one of the many inspiring St. Baldrick’s Foundation events to raise money for this awesome cause.

So this year, I’m giving myself two months to raise more than $500, and I would be truly honored and humbled by your support. Seriously, ask my fiancee, it takes a lot to humble me. This will do it.

Even small donations of $5, $10, or $25 will make a BIG impact on the lives of the thousands of children enduring and yet to endure the pain and suffering caused by cancer and its treatment.

CLICK HERE TO MAKE YOUR DONATION! (Pssssst. It’s tax deductible!)

Here are pictures and video from the 2011 St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser at B & G Barbershop in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Goodnight Sweet Prince: An Obituary for Kim Jong-il

20111220-073018.jpgLast weekend, the world lost a precious gem when Kim Jong-il, the supreme and dear leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, passed away at the age of 69. According to North Korean television, Kim Jong-il died from overwork and exhaustion associated with maintaining the amazing standard of living known in North Korea. However, we are slowly learning that Kim Jong Il may have died from his exhaustion and wounds after defeating Chuck Norris, who has not been seen or heard from in several weeks. If this is true, we can all rest assured knowing that Kim Jong-il died so that our sins may not be punished by Chick Norris.

Kim Jong-il, a trendsetter in fashion and a man of impeccable class, was survived by his loving wife Kim Young-sook; three loving mistresses; his three sons Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-chul, and the most loyal Kim Jong-un; and his daughter Kim Sul-song. These were not his only children, however, as he regarded himself as the father of every North Korean citizen.

The legacy of Kim Jong-il will live on forever as the man who created a nuclear weapon for the North Korean people and the mastermind who invented the hamburger.

Now, it will be up to the young Kim Jong-un to continue the incredible and inspiring work done by his father and grandfather before him.

Goodnight, sweet prince. Your children are in good hands.

Live Blogging the GOP Debate… the online one that couldn’t get on national TV

Seriously, his hair looks lopsided.

8:52 – Again, the debate ends 8 minutes early.  That happened during the CNN debate, too.

8:51 – Romney: The people no longer think their children will be better off than they are… isn’t that a Huckabee talking point from 2007?

8:51 – Perry: I talked with unemployed people.   They need someone to make America America again.

8:50 – Huntsman: I kicked unemployment butt in Utah.  More people need the dignity of a job.

8:49 – Santorum: When manufacturing left, middle-income left.  Economic mobility is greater in Europe than in the United States.

8:49 – Ron Paul’s last question!  Yay!

8:48 – Gingrich: I grew up an Army brat, my family has been out of work, I feel their pain.  But we aren’t being hired to sympathize with everybody.  We’re hired to solve the problem.

8:47 – Cain: “I was pooe before I was poor”

8:47 – Bachmann: blah blah blah…. your clones are ready… blah blah blah

8:46 – Who is that idiot shouting in the background?  Probably a Ron Paul supporter.

8:45 – Santorum: The problem is the break down of the American family, fathers not taking responsibility, and if people don’t support traditional marriage.

8:44 – Perry: So many people live in poverty because Obama is a job killer.

8:43 – Romney: Let’s fundamentally restructure our economic system.

8:42 – Romney: We don’t need stimulus bills, we need permanent changes to the tax code.  Tax breaks shouldn’t be temporary, because employers don’t hire people for only a year or two.

8:41 – Cain: People protesting on Wall Street should blame themselves… the 14 million unemployed Americans aren’t to blame for not being rich.

8:40 – Gingrich: You have to be able to afford it before you buy it.  That’s where we went wrong.

8:39 – President Bush video: Bush is bragging about more people owning homes than ever before.  Says the more the better.

8:38 – Perry: We created tons of thousands of jobs and 75% of those we subsidized didn’t donate to my campaign.  (So 25% did)

8:37 – Perry: The Federal Government shouldn’t be involved in subsidizing new industries.  (Turns out Perry got money from the companies he subsidized as the Governor of Texas)

8:36 – Ron Paul again… why is he even invited to these things?

8:36 – Cain: Get rid of the capital gains tax… my plan will do that.

8:34 – I wonder if Bachmann has a speech disability where she only knows how to speak using empty rhetoric she reads on Facebook.

8:33 – Romney – Obama’s heart is in the right place, but the Democrats have no idea what they’re doing.  Regulation is hampering small community banks that focus on small businesses.

8:32 – Q: How can you loosen credit for small businesses?

8:31 – Ron Paul again… and Krista just got here!  Yay, I’ll talk to her for a little bit.

8:30 – Cain likes how Alan Greenspan handled the Fed in the early 1990s.  He has two unnamed candidates to fill that place.

8:29 – Perry: States shouldn’t have to go before Washington, DC asking “Mother, May I” whenever they want to try something.  Each state is a laboratory of Democracy.

8:26 – Hey, New Jersey’s governor is in the crowd.  (He endorsed Mitt Romney earlier)

8:23 – That was actually a REALLY neat segment.  I want to see an entire debate run like that where each candidate asks questions of the other candidate.  THAT is how to find the differences between the candidates.

8:22 – Cain wants to create a 2/3rds of Congress mandate before increasing the tax and that he would veto any tax increases.  Somebody mumbled, “You won’t be President forever.”

8:22 – Santorum asks Cain, “Can we trust you with your lack of experience to not give away our freedoms?”

8:20 – Bachmann is talking about Obamacare.

8:19 – Bachmann isn’t answering the question.  She has no specifics.

8:18 – Romney asks Bachmann, “Expand on your OTHER ideas to get people back together.”  (He knows she’s an idiot)

8:18 – Romney:  The plan is favored 3-to-1 by the people in Massachusetts.

8:17 – Romney: Massachusetts has the lowest percentage of kids uninsured (less than 1%).  Over 1 million kids in Texas are uninsured.

8:16 – Romney: We helped out 8% of the population that was uninsured, but left the 92% of the people with insurance alone.

8:16 – Perry: Romneycare is Obamacare.  How would you respond to that criticism?

8:16 – Cain doesn’t object to the audit of the Fed.

8:15 – Ron Paul’s people ARE ignorant… even if Herman Cain didn’t say so.

8:14 – Okay, I need to keep my Diet Coke further away from my desk.  That air head is still talking.

8:13 – *Sigh* Ron Paul… I’m going to go grab a Diet Coke.

8:12 – Romney: That’s BS.  My background is awesome.  We created tens of thousands of new jobs and created companies like Staples and the Sports Authority.

8:12 – Huntsman: Romney, your background sucks.  How do you expect to win?

8:11 – Romney says he’s not worried about rich people and that’s why he focused his tax cut on the middle class.

8:10 – Gingrich claims there’s a lot in the Romney plan that’s good, but says on page 47, there’s a capital gains tax cut at a point lower than Obama’s plan… I can’t summarize that question, dammit!

8:09 – Romney: Simple solutions are inadequate.

8:08 – Cain: Romney, can you lay out all 59 points of your 165 page plan?  Is it honest, open, and transparent?

8:07 – Rick Perry says he came to the GOP at a younger age than Ronald Reagan.

8:06 – Rick Perry was campaigning for Al Gore when Reagan was saving the economy… Bachmann wants to know how he expects us to trust him.

8:03 – I kind of wonder how many people are watching this debate live.  The streaming quality is pretty darn good.  Usually these things break down after 1,000+ people tune in to the same live stream.

7:59 – Hahaha!  The microphones kicked back on unexpectedly to some guy saying, “Look how warm everybody looks,” followed by a woman laughing.

7:58 – My favorite part of the last segment was that part where they didn’t let Ron Paul talk.  Awesome!

7:57 – The candidates will ask questions of each other after the break… now this might be interesting.

7:57 – Romney challenges each candidate to put out a plan on what he will replace Obamacare with.

7:56 – Romney will repeal Obamacare on Day 2.

7:54 – Santorum is assaulting Cain and the 999 plan like crazy.  He’s right saying the 999 plan won’t remain a 999 plan because the tax rates will increase. (This is why the Fair Tax is superior to it)

7:54 – Santorum: “I want to go to war with China.”  Seriously?

7:53 – Great, it’s a YouTube debate for CEOs and special interest groups.

7:51 – Perry says we shouldn’t be focused on China cheating… or 999… we should be focused on putting Americans back to work again.  I wonder how competent he is on foreign policy, because Romney is right on this one.

7:50 – Tough talk on China during an election always results in a President displaying cowardice before the Chinese.  Mitt says he’ll take action against China against the WTO on day one of his presidency.

7:49 – Foreign trade laws!  Woohoo!  My attention is peaked!

7:47 – Bachmann says you should turn the 999 plan upside down: a 666 plan! “The devil is in the details.”… and if you fold the dollar bill a certain way, you can see the twin towers burning!  I didn’t think it was possible for me to disrespect Bachmann anymore than I already did.

7:46 – Bachmann claims the 999 plan is a tax plan, not a jobs plan.  Claims the sales tax pipeline is not something you want to give the Congress.

7:45 – Bloomberg says the 999 plan wouldn’t do everything Cain says it will.  Cain says Bloomberg is wrong… but doesn’t really explain WHY… but insists it will be revenue neutral

7:44 – This would be a lot more interesting if there were a hand full of Democrats at this table, too.  Let’s see who can handle the Democrats the best!

7:42 – Seriously, she looks like the aliens in Episode 2 that made the clones.

7:41 – Newt interrupts again and calls the super-committee bill was “stupid” and that it will be repealed before defense cuts are made

7:40 – Mitt says it’s a terrible idea to cut defense, so the super-committee needs to find some serious ways to cut spending

7:38 – Perry wisely quotes Reagan’s diary where Reagan lamented on tax increases but the failure of congress to pass spending cuts

7:37 – Hey! It’s Ronald Reagan!

7:33 – I really wish there was a timer when Ron Paul starts talking.

7:30 – Gingrich interrupts.  Claims our economic advisers in the Fed are incompetent and don’t have a clue.

7:30 – Cain also agrees with the bailout, but disagrees with it’s implementation, like Romney.

7:27 – Mitt Romney says the financial system bailout was necessary, but not perfect.

7:25 – Mitt claims the financial crisis in Europe and the threat to the US financial system is hypothetical… right

7:24 – Cain must be gaining ground if he’s becoming a target for everyone else at that target.

7:23 – Cain demanded a chance to respond… describes his plan and says it WILL pass because the American people want it to pass.

7:23 – Huntsman earned some points with me on this round.

7:22 – Huntsman claims Cain’s 999 plan is not doable.

7:22 – Huntsman claims that those good people wouldn’t want to get into government, today… though he criticized background checks… why?

7:20 – Huntsman wants men like his father (an entrepreneur) to advise him on economic matters…

7:19 – Michelle Bachmann looks like an alien from Star Wars.

7:18 – Gingrich is defending Palin on her “death panel” comment… the difference is that Gingrich actually explained himself whereas Palin is clueless.

7:16 – Huntsman claims there is a barrier between innovation and the marketplace created by the government.  Well said.

7:15 – Santorum attacks Cain: “Unlike Cain, My plan will actually pass.”

7:13 – Anybody want to take bets on when Santorum will drop out?

7:12 – Ron Paul is talking… so I’m going to take a bathroom break.

7:11 – Newt Gingrich claims the politicians need to be arrested and gets the first applause of the night.

7:10 – Newt Gingrich says leftist activists are slobs, honest people who are worried pick up after themselves… sad but true.

7:09 – Michelle Bachmann claims the government (and Democrats in particular) alone is responsible for the bad bank loans… not 100% honest, is it?

7:08 – Woa, Michelle Bachmann is still in this race?

7:07 – Rick Perry says he doesn’t have a plan out there because he’s been working on it for 8 weeks… Romney has had 6 years.

7:06 – Rick Perry just had the most unapproving, elitist face while Mitt Romney was talking.  Classic.

7:05 – Mitt Romney’s hair looks lopsided.

7:04 – Dear God!  What happened to Rick Perry’s face?  The wrinkles!!!!

7:01 – Cain wants to end the paralysis in Washington by throwing out the current tax code… that may not be the best place to start.

Protest Scheduled Against Fairhaven Child Abuse! Sunday at 5pm!

Concerned citizens from across our community are gathering with victims and former members of the Fairhaven Church in order to publicly protest the decades of child abuse that was finally revealed on national television the other night. Tomorrow, Sunday, at 5pm, people are gathering for what’s being described as a PEACEFUL “Good, Old-Fashioned Protest.”

In case you missed Anderson Cooper’s segment on the child abuse taking place right in our own back yard, here’s the video and transcript if the video doesn’t work:

Roger Voegtlin, the leader of this cult-like church; who won’t even call his daughter by name, forced his son wear a dress in front of his peers, and calls humiliation a “habit;” gives us some idea of what the survivors endured and why this protest is so important. If you want a more full picture of what we’re up against, take some time to read the more than 80 comments left by victims and witnesses on my first post about the abuses at Fairhaven.

And in the interest of clarity, let’s be sure everyone knows that this is NOT a protest against any religion. This is not any kind of political protest. This is a peaceful protest against the regular physical and emotional abuse we’ve been discussing and all those responsible for this “ungodly discipline”.

You can find the Facebook Event Page for this protest here:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=137985006299017

Please share this with all of your local family and friends.  The NWI Times is sending a reporter and photographer and other area news outlets may show up as well. You don’t have to talk to the press or anyone else you’re not comfortable with. Your presence alone will be a loud voice on the part of the all concerned citizens of our community.

Fairhaven Baptists under scrutiny by CNN for child abuse

VIDEO UPDATE:

Here’s the video and transcript of the “Ungodly Discipline” segment aired on AC360 on the night of September 22, 2011.  Kudos to everyone involved who made this story possible.

==================

Tonight (Thursday, September 22) at 7pm Central, Anderson Cooper (host of Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN) is airing a story that takes place in my humble hometown of Chesterton, IN.  Despite all the really awesome things about this town and community that I love so much, the story isn’t going to be a positive one.  Perhaps you’ve seen one of his “Ungodly Discipline” segments before on his show.  Well, after airing the show, former members of the Fairhaven Baptist church are coming forward with some horrifying stories to share with national television.  While I won’t know what is being brought forward in the article until after I watch the segment, I do know that former church members are starting to share their stories on Facebook.

After exchanging e-mails with some of the brave people who left the “cult,” I decided to share some of the shared stories here.  The only editing I’ve done to the paragraphs below are formatting changes to allow for the content to be read easier in this blog format.  (I pressed enter to make paragraphs and added titles.)

In the interest of fairness, I have no way of validating the stories below except to say that the number of witnesses coming forward is alarming.  At the same time, I have no reason to doubt them, either.  If it matters, I believe the victims.  For my own part, I grew up in this town and live here now.  With that said, my contact with this seclusive church has been extremely limited.  That alone is a red flag in a small and friendly town like Chesterton, Indiana.  The contact I and many of my neighbors have had in the past has been from their church’s door-to-door solicitors.   On more than one occasion as children, my younger sister and I were told that we were going to hell if we didn’t go to church with them.

To be honest, their approach of selling God like obnoxious vacuum cleaner salesmen only further strengthened my Catholic faith growing up.  Unfortunately, this type conduct and the horror stories from the rare excommunicated transfer students to our excellent public school also did a lot to enforce the cynicism towards religion as a whole among some of my peers.

Read the stories below and I think you may begin to understand why.

The Mexico Trip:
… This was the first major trip the youth group had taken after Voegtlin and Damron took over the youth group. Whitecar was along for the ride as well… And everyone of these guys had a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. My father was along on this trip as a bus driver along with some other old timers…R.L. Grant and Dean Leslie. These guys looked up to my dad as a sort of source of wisdom I guess…

As is in any youth group the younger kids are immature…thats why they are in 7th grade. A few of the kids made some stupid mistakes, some hardly worth mentioning, yet Damron felt like he needed to come down hard with an iron fist. Darcel McCoy did something silly and stupid in the shower but was accused of deliberately trying to urinate on someones tooth brush…(He didn’t) in case you were wondering… Caleb Stockman and Tom Almanza were seen on the opposite side of the road without permission and had stopped to buy a coke or something silly…nothing really offensive or a deep sin.

The next day we were not allowed to eat lunch or have anything to drink…mind you this is Mexico in summertime 100+ degree temperature in the shade…(and at this point none of us knew why we were being punished) We spent the day knocking on doors and inviting people out to see a film at a mission church that we were there to help…It was nothing more than brick walls with a tin roof, as it got later people began to show up at the church and the girls were allowed to sit down with them…The guys were sent upstairs under the tin roof in a room with no windows or ventilation, we sat up there and waited and waited for about 2-3 hours (still no idea, and pretty hungry and thirsty and PO’d by this time…)

After the service finished we got on the bus to head back to the compound that we were staying at and were told no one was allowed to talk. We wondered if they were finally going to feed us or at least tell us what was going on… But when we got back to the gym where we slept each night we were told to get changed and go to bed…once again, no talking. By this time I knew something was up…and didn’t think for a minute that we were going to be getting a good nights sleep…

Lights had been out for about 30 minutes when the gym doors came crashing open and garbage cans went flying like an opening scene from Full Metal Jacket… And Carl Bain in all his glory yelled for us to square the deck away…now most of these kids weren’t raised in military families and had no clue they just stood there…Finally he got it across that he wanted them to clear out an area in the middle of the floor and form a circle. They then began to berate everyone in the gym, saying “You guys don’t take this serious, ‘You wanna play games?’ fine we are going to play some games!”

They called Darcel, Caleb, and Tommy into the center of the circle and sat them down in chairs next to a fan and fed them steak fajitas and sandwiches, made sure they were nice and comfortable. Then began to make us do PT jumping jacks, sit-ups pushups, bends and thrusts(ask someone who has been in the military, what bends and thrusts are) then leg lifts while Steve Damron ran around the room stepping on each persons stomach saying that if they were doing it right they wouldn’t be able to feel him…

All the while we were told that we were being punished because of the 3 in the middle…this went on for about an hour and a half with no stop. Finally we are told to stand up…and they pulled Darcel into the middle and told us what he had done…or what they thought he had done…And they began to force him to drink liquid…It started out with bottles of arizona tea and then 2 liters of coke and gallons of water…I literally watched his stomach swell up from the liquid he was trying to ingest…and as if this wasn’t enough…Jeff Voegtlin…and I’m quoting him and dare him to dispute it…said “Only a “NIGGER” would do something like what you did butch…” ( Darcel is an African American by the way) then they forced him to drink more water until he literally exploded vomited and urinated all over himself and what not every where…

Then they made him clean it up and we went back to doing more PT while they sat him back down with his compadres…they had shut the air off in the gym as well, to make it more comfortable for us…”How thoughtful” after about another 45 min to an hour of this, they once again clarified they were punishing us as a whole due to the sins of those three guys…and that they were going to go outside for a break and kept saying they trusted that we would take care of it…As soon as they closed the doors behind them the entire 60-70 guys jumped the three in the middle…

Caleb was lucky he was a bit stocky and no one wanted to mess with him…Darcel and Tommy got the brunt of it…I watched tommy’s brother Andy beat the crap out of him…hitting him with his class ring and bouncing his head off of the cement, all the while yelling that tommy had sent some poor mexicans to hell because of his playing around and not being serious… Tommy the next day could not open his eyes they were swollen shut and Im pretty sure he had one if not several concussions…both he and Darcel would have been admitted to any emergency room here in the states , but those Jerks didn’t even have the thought to check them out….(Had they died or had been paralyzed this story would have taken a much different turn)

We were then told to go to sleep and not talk about any of this to the girls the next day…

  • Darcel’s Version of the Story:
The doors in the shower was broken, and I couldn’t get out. I was 13yrs old and had to pee! So I went in the shower! Since I told them “I couldn’t hold it” I was forced to drink gallons of water and coke and tea until I had to pee, then made to urinate on myself. Again, this is after puking several times all over myself because of all the liquids being forced down. (tea, coke, dirty water)
  • Michael’s Story:
I remember this day like it was yesterday. Now mind the fact some of things I will say came to my knowledge years after the incident. Earlier in the day when most people were getting ready to go out canvassing, word started to spread around that staff was upset and people were going to be in trouble. So some people do what survival instincts prompted them to do and that was to save their own skin and tell on others. So Don Whitecar stood up and said if anyone has any information about people breaking the rules they need to come forward or everyone in the canvassing group would be punished. So we had people fabricating stories to save their own skin. They compiled a list of about 25 people that had “done wrong.”Since they were experts at making mountains out of mole hills, they said it was a widespread problem and needed to be dealt with. This is when Sam’s story comes into play. We also had gone to Mexico with a missions group that was not affiliated with our group and took their buses and people into chihuahua. So they put us down to bed until thwarting bus kids that came with us and the bearing precious seeds people were asleep out on the bus. While the people in the middle were eating they got the list of people out and one by one called them to the middle of the circle where Jeff Voegtlin was standing with a paddle. They were saying he was the executioner and would be administering swats. after you had been called out, they read the charges against you and decided on the how many swats you were to receive. They even had an algorithm to compute swats for some. For example they would say take the number of charges, multiply it times 3 and divide by 2. If it was an odd number that you divided by then they would ask what butt cheek you wanted half the swat on. Some were told to go butt naked for their swats. After this was done, they focused on darcel and made the kid, whose tooth brush was allegedly peed on, get his toothbrush for darcel to brush his teeth with.At the same time they told all the seniors to get their nice clothes and put them at the feet of darcel so that he would wet himself and the seniors clothes so they would be upset. Now mind touch, fairhaven staff was very good at prompting others to do their physical abuse for them. When darcel drank so much that he peed himself and the seniors clothes, they got in his face calling him names and shouting at him. They then walked out telling everyone they hoped the problem would be solved when they got back. It was not Andy who beat up tom, but I will not say who it was. People need to understand we had so much animosity, hatred and emotions stuck inside of us for so long that when the opportunity for an outlet came it came out with a vengeance. We would take our frustrations of staff out on others. After the beating, they made darcel clean the bathrooms with the toothbrush and was not allowed to pee or sleep that night.

The Cover-Up:
This story took place 15 years ago, but I have people willing to tell their stories from recent years as well. Many of us were too afraid to tell our parents (we had been told not to tell a soul) who had signed consent forms to allow these guys to “be responsible” for us. The staff learned not too long ago Caleb Stockman had a similar picture of Tommy after he had been beaten. They came to Caleb and requested he destroy the evidence in front of them.

My father was and is the Head of the Deacon Board there and I have been forewarned that if I am responsible for getting this story out in the news that all ties will be officially severed…this is a common occurrence among many of my friends. When they speak up against abuse or disagree with the church or Dr. Voegtlin their parents are pressured into disowning them and forbidding their other chidden from speaking to them. I hope you know that I don’t hate the “church” as much as I hate the 40+ years of abuse and ruined lives it has produced…Broken Families, Broken Relationships…

“X” Your Family:
I believe that there is abuse going on at Fairhaven. I was there from 1987 until 1992. I was affected by the way they conducted themselves and my family was affected also. There have been long term affects from the way they have raised children there and from their cruel ways and unforgiving nature. People there are taught that it is o.k. not to forgive and that it is o.k. to turn your back on your family…they say “X your family and that will erase them out of your life forever.” God says “forgive them and I will forgive you.” There is a whole lot more than just physical abuse going on there.

Striking Babies for Crying:
I personally observed some of the abuse when I babysat for one of the families in the church. It was my nursing home leader and I went home to babysit for them after our service that day. Their 2 year old daughter had fallen asleep during the service and when she got home she got 10 swats: 5 for falling asleep, 2 for crying and making noise when she was awakened, 2 for crying when told that she would be “dealt with” when she got home, and 1 for crying while the first 9 swats were being administered. They made me watch, then made it very clear that I was expected to do the same while they were gone. One of their kids did lie to me while I was there that afternoon, but I was so upset about what would probably happen that I didn’t tell the parents.

Parents Not Protecting Their Children:
I attended from 1977-1991, and to this day, I still become physically ill anytime I am in Chesterton because of this place. I pray that this exposure will finally lead to some justice for those who suffered from this awful place all in the “name of Jesus.” What was so hard to comprehend, was how the parents of these children just stood back and did nothing. Those who have children should know and understand that they are entrusted to us by God to love and protect.

Personally, I did not experience any physical abuse; I did experience emotional and psychological abuse. Like many others, it has taken a long time to get through it.
I pray that something will come from this national exposure. No more children and families should have to continue to suffer.

Drowning:
I remember and still have problems stemming from the treatment I received at Fairhaven. I was physically punished falsely so many times and treated like I was worthless. I remember when my favorite teacher, who never really fit in and was often criticized, suddenly drowned in the lake behind the church. He was an expert swimmer, young and healthy and he knew the lake like the back of his hand. There was much speculation surrounding his death and it still haunts me to this day. My self-esteem has suffered immensely because of this place. Thank God that my mother left when she did.

Gun Violence:
her son suffered physical abuses and was threatened and traumatized with a gun by staff members at Fairhaven. The broadcasts, as it appears has given many courage to come forward. Praise God and may they continue to do so!!!He was held at gunpoint as a young boy by Fairhaven staff member, while they assaulted him to some measure. We are currently gathering facts and seeking a secular teacher whom consoled the boy on the matter years ago.

Satan’s Fabricators:
you know what’s funny? i remember voeglin preaching about people like us. he said we were fabricators of stories and liars. that satan uses us to try to destroy creator’s work there. i guess i now fall into that category.

3rd Place Isn’t Good Enough:
i got the hell beat out of me when i came in 3rd place at a wrestling tournament instead of 1st. can’t remember his name but the youth pastor then (short, italian guy) was also the coach. he had me box 2 9th graders. 2 10th graders. 2 jr. and 1 sr. for losing. i was only in 8th grade. clearly remember that one. i still carry some anger from that time.

HPV Vaccinations

Let it be said right now that Michelle Bachmann is exactly what is wrong with the Republican Party.  During her performance earlier this week, she hit Perry again and again over “FORCING” young girls to become vaccinated.  Now, I’m no fan of Governor Perry.  I think Romney’s poker analogy during the debate was a good one (I’m not a Romney fan either).  However, in Perry’s defense, his executive order never forced girls to do anything and, just as importantly, was for the best.

For those of you who slept during sex-ed week in high school, HPV stands for human papillomavirus, which can be transmitted via sexual activity, which leads to its classification as a sexually transmitted disease (STD).  For men, HPV can often be harmless with no symptoms.  For women, however, HPV can lead to cervical cancer, which is incredibly deadly.

First, let’s examine Bachmann’s false claim: that Perry has forced this vaccination on the girls of Texas.

The truth is that Perry hasn’t FORCED anything on anyone.  If a parent doesn’t want a daughter to be vaccinated against HPV, then they simply opt-out.  Does that sound people are being forced to do something?  I made this comparison in a conversation after the debate… when the Nazis were forcing Jews into concentration camps and committing heinous acts of genocide, did Hitler give them an opt-out at any time?

“Hey, Hitler, I see what you’re trying to do here, but I don’t think I want my family thrown in an oven.  Thanks but no thanks.”

That’s not what happened.  When you’re forced into something, it means there’s no way out of it.  Governor Perry’s executive order ensured that parents who didn’t want their daughters immunized didn’t have to get their daughters immunized.  Therefore, nobody was “FORCED” into anything and Michelle Bachmann deserves all the respect you would give to a liar and fear monger.

Anyway, this is obviously all a political ploy by Bachmann to undermine Perry’s candidacy.  She’s using it and encouraging people to respond to the vaccine by yelling, “My 12 year old daughter isn’t going to be a whore!  Giving her this vaccine will send the wrong message!”  Or better: “Governor Perry thinks your 12-year-old is a whore!”

This is exactly why good people stay out of politics.

The truth of the matter is that HPV is not strictly an STD.  In fact, it’s even possible for HPV to be handed down from a mother to her child.  If that were to happen, the child would be prone to develop some pretty serious health problems not long after Bachmann or some other nut convinced her parents not to vaccinate.

Now granted, the majority of transfers happen through sexual conduct (to include oral sex).  So, consider this.  Very few people die virgins.  The fact of the matter is that sexual relations are actually needed for the reproduction of the world’s population.  Sex is vital to procreation.  So, let’s say a virgin young woman marries the love of her life, who just so happens may have done something he regretted (or not) in his youth.   They get together and are happily married with three kids.  Then, as is all too frequent in the world, mom finds out she has cervical cancer and 8 months left to live.  This woman did NOTHING wrong.  She saved herself for marriage, procreated only with the man she loved in a union sanctified by God, and now she’s facing an untimely death because of HPV.

Oh, by the way, she’s still young enough that her parents will get to watch her die.

I don’t know many parents who would blindly trust the young men their daughters are with (and for good reason).  Why trust them with this when it’s so easy and so risk free to protect her from a horrible death with this vaccine?

If the population is vaccinated against a disease like HPV, it will be one less thing floating around and killing innocent people.  Indeed, as Governor Perry said, it was a public health decision and the right one.

The final criticisms of Perry come from his decision to use an executive order and the fact that the maker of the vaccine just happened to make a $5,000 donation to Perry’s campaign.  There’s traction here.

Perry admits that making this an executive order was a mistake, so we’ll leave that alone (SEE!  It’s good to admit your mistakes, politicians!)

The $5,000 donation is another matter.  After Bachmann brought this up (which was by far the ballsiest thing ever done during a primary debate), Perry retorted that out of the $30 million he raised; $5,000 wasn’t enough to buy him off.

1. If not, how much does it cost to buy you off?

2. Why the hell did you have that number on the tip of your tongue?

I ran for public office last year.  It was a local election and I had a few dozen donations.  Granted, I remember everyone who donated to my campaign and I have a general idea of how much was donated (less than 100 or more than 100); but if you were to ask me exactly how much Chip Saltsman, my grandfather, or our Republican candidate for Sheriff donated, I wouldn’t have a clue.  I doubt my treasurer would know either without digging through our campaign finance reports.

Granted, I didn’t have any $5,000 donations and I didn’t raise anywhere near $30 million.  However, I’m confident that I was much more closely involved with the finances of my campaign than Perry was given the small scale of my operation.  I find it fishy that for a man who offers very few numbers to know on the spot exactly how much any given corporate donor gave him… unless it was part of something else.

Now, perhaps $5,000 was the max Merck could have contributed to his campaign… in that case, I could see a favor somehow being arranged given the closeness of that company to Perry and his campaign.  Just to be clear, I’m not accusing anyone of anything.  I’m simply stating that the potential for “crony capitalism” is present.  Given the high-profile nature of this, however, if there is anything more than meets the eye, I’m sure the FBI would be investigating Governor Perry.  (That would be an epic “October Surprise”.)

On the other hand, Perry may very easily be telling us the truth.  Here in Indiana, Governor Daniels rushed to lease the Indiana Toll Road to a foreign company.  At the time, everyone was up in arms, accusing the Governor of rushing the deal hastily because he was trying to pull a fast one on the people of Indiana.  In truth, he was so hasty because it was an awesome deal for Hoosiers and the foreign investors had no idea what they were taking on.  The same thing may be said for Governor Perry; who may have seen an opportunity to begin saving the lives of thousands of women across his state, and he didn’t want to wait for the legislative process.

In addition to all I have given you to think about, I also leave you with this:

I made this instead of writing this post sooner after the debate.

Live Blogging the CNN-Tea Party Debate

I thought Romney and Gingrich probably won the debate.  Rick Perry did a good job, too considering he was getting attacked from all sides.  Bachmann and Paul lost.  Huntsman was way too negative and aggressive.

8:52 – Who the heck ends a debate 8 minutes early?

8:51: Debate is over.  Wolf Blitzer promised a question on Iran and Israel, but we didn’t get it.  That’s really a shame.

8:49 – Santorum would add a Bedroom.  Gingrich would kick out all the Czars (applause).  Ron Paul is an idiot.  Perry would bring his wife, the best First Lady ever.  Romney would put the bust of Winston Churchill back into the White House.  Bachmann would bring the founding documents.  Cain would bring a sense of humor.  Huntsman would bring his Harley Davidson.

8:48 – END OF COMMERCIAL BREAK – Krista is joining me now.

8:45 – 5TH COMMERCIAL BREAK

8:45 – Perry answers the question correctly.  Stay until the Afghans can finish the job themselves.  They can’t do that yet.

8:43 – Huntsman to Afghan refugee: It’s time to get our 100,000 troops out of Afghanistan.   When America is great, the women of Afghanistan will benefit.  Yeah, because that’s what happened in the 1990s.

8:41 – Ron Paul: Everyone seems to think we should be at war with Islam… I certainly hope not.

8:41 – Santorum BASHES Paul for blaming US for 9/11.  US stands for freedom and that’s why we were attacked.

8:40 – Gingrich is giving Paul a look of disbelief.  How can someone be THIS stupid?

8:39 – Ron Paul… blah blah blah… somebody give him some tin foil to play with.

8:37 – Gingrich: Threat poised by terrorism are much more serious than most realize.

8:37 – Cain: Eliminate the EPA regulations banning us from exploiting our energy resources.

8:36 – Huntsman: “We can spend all night talking about where Mitt’s been on all the issues.”  OUCH

8:35 – Perry: It’s a state’s rights issue.  Texas has good relations with Mexico.

8:34 – Romney slams Huntsman and Perry on illegal immigration.

8:33 – Romney: Latinos came here for opportunity, not hand outs.  Build a fence, don’t give free tuition, don’t give drivers licences.

8:32 – Huntsman: Perry saying we can’t secure the border is treasonous.  That was uncalled for and it will bite Huntsman in the ass.  Huntsman gave them drivers licences.

8:32 – Perry opposed to the DREAM Act.  Only 4 dissenting votes in the Texas state legislature.

8:31 – Bachmann: That’s the DREAM Act.  We need private sponsors for each person that comes in here.  That seems unrealistic.

8:30 – Perry: It’s better to let them go to school and earn their own way than have them on the government dole.

8:28 – Santorum: Perry wanted to attract Latino voters by giving illegal immigrants free tuition.  I tell Latinos that they need to speak English.

8:27 – Perry: Federal Gov’t a failure.  Texas had to spend money to make up for those failures.  The fence is not realistic… we need man-power instead.

8:27 – Santorum: Enforce the laws against employers and secure the border… THEN deal with those that are here illegally.

8:26 – We’re back again.

8:24 – 4TH COMMERCIAL BREAK … What the hell?

8:23 – We’re back.

8:21 – 3RD COMMERCIAL BREAK

8:21 – Bachmann nearly sprints off stage for the commercial break.  I wonder if she’ll be back before the debate resumes this time?

8:20 – I really dislike Bachmann.  She doesn’t have the intelligence necessary to be President.

8:18 – “Should society let man without insurance die?”  Crowd shouts “YES!” Paul says, “No.  Churches should do it.”

8:17 – Romney opposed to ObamaCare.

8:16 – Romney and Perry laugh about Obama being trustworthy.  Romney claims RomneyCare and ObamaCare are fundamentally different.

8:13 – Romney stands by his RomneyCare mandate in Massachusetts.

8:10 – Santorum slams Perry on the policy of inoculations.  I disagree with Santorum on this one.  I’ll write a post about this later in the week, but STD’s don’t vanish because couples have marital sex rather than pre-marital sex.

8:10 – Perry says the $5000 donation wasn’t enough to buy him off.  I agree with him.

8:09 – Bachmann further accuses Perry of corruption and being in bed with drug company that provided the vaccination.

8:08 – Bachmann opposed to vaccination against cervical cancer.  Lies about Perry’s plan, arguing it was a mandate (it wasn’t).

8:07 – Perry: I’ll use an executive order to eliminate as much of ObamaCare.  Ron Paul, you suck.

8:05 – Executive orders… Rick Perry says he went about vaccination executive order the wrong way… should have gone through the legislature.  Admits he made a mistake.

8:04 – FAIR TAX QUESTION!  Romney: NO!  It has its benefits… but it lowers the burden on the highest and lowest income folks and increases it on the middle class.  Instead, let’s have a tax cut for middle class Americans.

8:03 – “Is eliminating a tax loophole a tax increase?”  Another good question… Newt doesn’t answer it particularly clearly, but the audience loved his response.

8:02 – Gingrich: I favor all energy development.

8:01 – Gingrich: GE has paid no taxes because of “green tax subsidies.”

8:01 – Huntsman doesn’t answer the question… the only right answer is “All of it!  I support the Fair Tax.”

8:00 – “How much of every dollar I earn should I keep?” – Bachmann: “I love that question.”

7:59 – Romney prefers the Fed to regulating currency than Congress.  Romney wants to keep the Fed.  I agree.

7:58 – Perry covers, claims he said “almost treasonous.”  Says there’s no way to know if the Fed’s activities were political because of the lack of transparency.

7:56 – Should Ben Bernanke be tried for treason (Perry’s idea)?  Bachmann didn’t answer that question… big surprise.

7:56 – Cain supports the audit, too.

7:55 – Santorum wants to create manufacturing jobs in the US.  I wonder whether or not that’s doable… or even desirable.

7:54 – Santorum supports the audit of the Federal Reserve.

7:54 – COMMERCIAL BREAK OVER

7:51 – 2ND COMMERCIAL BREAK

7:50 – Huntsman is stuttering a little bit… I’m not sure if he remembers the question.

7:49 – I think Cain missed the core of the question.

7:48 – “Can you be pro-business and pro-worker?”  Great question!

7:47 – Gingrich: “American People create jobs.  Not Government.”  We created more jobs in Texas, Massachusetts, and Utah than Perry, Romney, and Huntsman in their terms.  Nice!

7:46 – Perry: Ron Paul, you’re an idiot.  People flock to Texas because Texas is awesome.

7:45 – Ron Paul did have a good jab at Perry there. “I don’t want to offend him.  He might raise my taxes.”

7:45 – Perry uses rhetoric instead of substance to reply.  Ron Paul accusing Perry of doubling his taxes.

7:44 – Mitt Romney: “Texas is a great place” but it didn’t need to be turned around.

7:43 – Ohhh!!!! Mitt: “If you are dealt four aces, it doesn’t make you a great poker player.”

7:42 – Mitt Romney just called for “Zero Income Tax.”  The Smart Phone/Pay Phone analogy fell a little flat.

7:40 – Cain calling for a “bold solution” – his 999 Plan.  9% flat taxes on everything, mixing Fair Tax and Flat Tax proposals.

7:39 – Bachmann again.  Did she just claim to be “one of the only” people in Washington opposed to raising the debt ceiling?  I know some Congressmen who would disagree with that statement.

7:38 – Perry is advocating deregulation.  Romney is smiling at him like he’s going to be his running mate… or that he wants to make out with him.

7:37 – Huntsman: We have a “heroin-like” addiction to foreign oil.

7:36 – Huntsman calls unemployment rate in the US a “human tragedy” and a “shipwreck”

7:35 – COMMERCIAL BREAK OVER

7:33 – One of the Twitter users at the bottom of the screen asked why there aren’t more young people being involved in this debate.  The media seems to think the Tea Party is dominated by voters who are 50+.   The four states I spoke in to Tea Parties seemed to be pretty diverse in terms of age.

7:32 – COMMERCIAL BREAK

7:31 – Michelle Bachmann got a second question… she’s using generic rhetoric with no ideas.

7:30 – Why is Ron Paul on stage?  He’s wasting everyone’s time.

7:29 – Romney argues for cutting spending… but did it in a way that made it sound like Perry and Gingrich didn’t oppose cutting spending.  Silver tongued devil.

7:28 – Perry recognized Gingrich was kicking butt and he backed his idea about eliminating fraud and waste.

7:27 – Has Bachmann only gotten the first question so far?   Not that it matters, she wouldn’t have answered any questions she got, anyway.

7:25 – Gingrich talking about modernization and specifics… but it’s exciting!

7:23 – Rick Santorum sounds stronger tonight than in other debates in the past.  Too little, too late.

7:22 – Newt is easily the smartest man on this stage… I just wish he was a better campaigner.

7:21 – Gingrich knows how to play politics, children.  Watch out.

7:21 – Haha!  Huntsman accuses Romney of having his book ghost-written.

7:20 – Herman Cain sounds good.

7:19 – Touche by Perry quoting Romney’s book… oh wait, he misquoted the book. Darn.

7:18 – Mitt is doing great… as much as I dislike it.

7:17 – Mitt has Perry in a corner. Perry won’t answer the question. “We’re having a conversation right now!” (Classic)

7:16 – Mitt’s criticism of Perry on Social Security comments ring true. It’s hilarious, Mitt is calling someone else a flip-flopper.

7:15 – Perry embraced his “Ponzi Scheme” comment about Social Security.

7:14 – I’m just going to update the live blog every 3 or 4 minutes. I may have overloaded my server. Hopefully the blackout won’t last much longer.

7:13 – Why can’t Michelle Bachmann stay on topic? Social Security, not medicare!

7:12 – Rick Santorum spun his 2006 loss very well.

7:11 – Darn website crashed.

7:08 – Wolf promises fair spread of questions and answer time… yeah right.  My money is on Huntsman getting the shaft.

7:07 – Geesh, is it just my TV or is this girl off key or something?

7:06 – It seems wrong to use a digital flag for the National Anthem… wouldn’t it be more conservative to use a real flag?

7:04 – I guess Rick Perry is the kind of guy who says “fellas”, Mitt Romney is the kind of guy who says “guys.”

7:03 – Someone queued up the wrong camera.

7:02 – Hi, Wolf Blitzer.  I’m Kevin Tracy.

7:01 – I love that they used that goofy clip of Santorum in the opening.  A guy just walks in front of him like he’s nobody and nearly hits him in the head with his “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.

7:00 – CNN’s video opening to the debate makes me ready for some football!
