I have no official stats, but one need only peruse a college dorm or classroom to see the damage. Moved my kid into a University dorm this summer, and saw a sea of MacBooks- and not one PC. I'm sure there was a smattering, but the implications are clear: The most technically savvy young consumer group has no patience for the ups-and-downs of the PC ops systems, and they are spending their money (and their parents' money) on what they see as the only reliable alternative.

Take it from someone who is using Vista every day. It ain't all it's cracked up to be. Of course, if I had my way, I would install Linux on it, but the software I have to use does not run on Linux. I also do not believe it runs on Mac, but am not sure about that.

Yes, XP was as close as Microsoft ever got to a really decent operating system.

Nothing from Microsoft works until it's had at least two years in Beta ... err, ... I mean, on the market.

Vista and Windows 7? Not for me.

I'm with you, when I find the need to replace this stuff, I'm going Mac. I've heard (possibly just one of those internet rumors, but I like it) that Apple has this philosophy: techs are told to build equipment assuming that their families will call them if things don't work. By the same token, I heard it repeated, that MS employees obviously don't talk to their families.
